Official guidance

Google’s engineering covers Search, Ads, Google Cloud, Android, YouTube, Workspace and AI products, largely built on shared large-scale infrastructure. Software engineering roles span backend and distributed systems, mobile and web clients, infrastructure and SRE, and ML systems.

Relevant roles: General software engineering, Backend engineering, Frontend / full-stack engineering, Distributed systems engineering, Infrastructure / platform engineering, Production engineering / SRE, ML engineering. Domains: Algorithms, Software engineering, Distributed & cloud, Interview skills.

What the sources establish

Google’s official careers pages describe the general process (a possible Google Hiring Assessment and role-related assessments such as a coding exercise, recruiter conversations, a panel of structured interviews with rubrics and open-ended questions, roughly 6 to 8 weeks) and state plainly that AI tools and Google Search are not permitted during interviews. A 2022 blog post adds dated, personal preparation advice. Not established from these sources: the number and types of software engineering interviews, the coding environment and languages, how system design varies by level, and team-specific differences.

  1. A Google engineer shares her technical interview tips

    Official, historical

Google (The Keyword blog). Published 2022-03-17; read 2026-10-05. Read in full for this page.

Scope: One Google Cloud software engineer’s personal account of preparing for technical interviews (“My Path to Google” series)

    Documented by this source

    • Personal preparation: technical interview prep books, flash cards, and Google’s videos on what to expect in technical interviews
    • Advice: practice solving problems out loud, know your algorithms and the interview structure, and remember that receiving a few hints is fine
    • Interviewers want to see how you think and whether you can solve challenging problems, even without a perfect answer

Outside or AI tools, according to this source: Not addressed. Follow the instructions in your own assessment invitation.

    • Dated (2022) personal advice published by Google, not a specification of the current process.
    • Describes no stages, round counts, formats or languages.

  2. Our hiring process (Google Careers)

    Official

Google Careers. Undated page; read 2026-10-05. Read in full for this page.

Scope: All Google roles and internships; the page says details vary by role and team

    Documented by this source

    • Before interviews, candidates may take the Google Hiring Assessment (work-style skills) and, where applicable, role-related assessments such as a coding exercise
    • One or two shorter recruiter conversations by phone or video, assessing key skills and sharing information about the team
    • For some roles, a small project before interviews, such as a case study or writing or code samples
    • Interviews are a panel over video or in person, structured with the same rubrics for every candidate for a role and built on open-ended, role-related questions; no brain teasers
    • The process typically takes roughly 6 to 8 weeks once interviews for a role begin
    • For refreshing coding fundamentals, the FAQ links Google videos on preparing for coding and systems design interviews

Outside or AI tools, according to this source: AI tools are not permitted during interviews. Follow the instructions in your own assessment invitation.

    • General across all Google roles; does not describe the software engineering loop’s number of interviews or their content.

  3. Interviewing at Google: Best practices, advice, and tips

    Official

Google Careers. Undated page; read 2026-10-05. Read in full for this page.

Scope: Candidates at the interview stage for any Google role

    Documented by this source

    • Many questions are behavioral (“tell me about a time”) or situational; STAR is suggested, along with a broad library of concise examples
    • Interviewers look at the thought process rather than only the answer; clarifying questions, stating assumptions and working through the problem with the interviewer are encouraged
    • Themes to prepare: handling ambiguity, working with people and teams, and leadership style; use data to show impact
    • In-person interviews are back for some roles, often after initial virtual interviews; the recruiter confirms the format
    • Outcome decisions can take several weeks because of structured feedback and internal reviews

Outside or AI tools, according to this source: Google Search and AI tools are not permitted during interviews. Follow the instructions in your own assessment invitation.

    • Generic across roles; contains no software-engineering-specific technical content.

Our preparation recommendation

This is our suggestion based on the role and the sources above. It is not a statement by Google.

Our recommendation, not Google guidance: the official pages describe structured, open-ended interviews judged on your thought process, and the 2022 post advises knowing your algorithms and practicing aloud. Prepare broad algorithm coverage with clear verbal reasoning, practice without any AI or search assistance, and prepare behavioral examples backed by data. Add system design if your level or role calls for it; the official FAQ links systems design preparation alongside coding.

  1. Explaining efficiency is part of showing your thought process on open-ended problems.

  2. The 2022 post advises knowing your algorithms; nothing read narrows the scope, so cover patterns broadly.

  3. A core algorithmic family for general software engineering preparation.

  4. Part of broad algorithm coverage; no Google source read here excludes it.

  5. Both the 2022 post and the official tips page stress explaining your reasoning out loud.

  6. The official FAQ links systems design preparation; prioritize it if your level or role includes design.

  7. The tips page says many questions start with “tell me about a time”; prepare STAR examples with data.

  8. Practicing aloud and getting used to the interview structure are the 2022 post’s main tips.

  9. AI tools and Search are not permitted, and some interviews are in person; plan accordingly.

Confirm with your recruiter

  • Which assessments come before interviews (Google Hiring Assessment, coding exercise or project work) and their rules and time limits.
  • The number and type of interviews in your panel (for example coding, system design, role-related knowledge, behavioral) for your level.
  • Which programming language you may use and the coding environment (shared document, editor or whiteboard).
  • Confirmation that no AI tools or Search may be used at any stage, including any assessment or project work.
  • Whether interviews are virtual or onsite, and what to bring if onsite.
  • What happens after interviews (team matching, reviews) and the expected timeline.

Limitations of this page

  • The official pages are generic across all Google roles; no software-engineering-specific loop description was read.
  • The engineer interview post is from 2022 and reflects one person’s experience.
